Skinny School Skirts

Those persons who have attempted to engage with me early in the morning would be very much aware that I am not a morning person. I will engage in conversations until odd hours of the night, but when morning breaks, my conversations are at a minimum until somewhere after 8 am. However, despite my preference, my role as a mother usually starts at 5:55 am every morning, with me getting my daughter ready for school. I must admit that while I love her (world without end), this is not my favorite thing to do. The reason is that it requires too much arguing. Simply put, too much talking. Well, this morning, was a bit strange. While assisting her to get dressed, I attempted to help her pull up her uniform skirt, which seemed a little tight. However, I figured the cut on my finger was the culprit, so I told her to just “wiggle in it”. But somehow the wiggling wasn’t working. I took the skirt back off and told her to make sure each foot was in a separate ‘hole’, and in the most annoyed tone I said, “Just pull up the skirt”. But it got stuck below her ‘bum’. Running late, I quickly grabbed another skirt, thinking this was just an older one, maybe from the previous school year. But to my surprise, that new one got stuck under her bum as well.  I started laughing profusely in disbelief and said to her “Yuh a get roun baby”, 🤣 (Jamaican for ‘you are putting on some weight’).

My daughter has always been skinny, mostly because she is a very picky eater, but it seemed like over the Christmas break, she had packed on some weight. Shockingly, she had outgrown her uniform skirts right before my eyes, and I didn’t even notice. Through my lens, she looked the same, but with the help of 2 ‘outgrown skirts’ on a school morning, I realized things were definitely not the same.

This got me thinking. Many times, things look the same to our naked eyes, when they truly are not. The things that we are praying about, like the marriage, the job, and the struggles with the kids, all seem unchanged. But, if we just stop and become a bit more observant, we will see the change. God is already in the midst of our circumstances, making small shifts, however, because it’s not as drastic as we would like, it passes us by. He is shifting things in position, inch by inch, but because we are used to the issue seeming so insurmountable, we are blind to the changes that are indeed taking place.

Today, I encourage us to start being more observant. Look for the small changes even if it’s just a ‘morsel’. Your situation is not the same, it is slowly but surely getting better. Speak it into the atmosphere, praising God for the shift. God is restoring you. He is making your crooked paths straight, one small move at a time. As Revelation 21:5 says ‘ … He is making everything new’. Just keep trusting him and wait expectantly for the change.

Prayer

Lord, today I ask that you help me to see my ‘burdening’ situations differently. Help me to see my small shifts as you turn things around for me. Lord, I praise you right where I am, knowing that you have already started to work things out for me. In Jesus name, Amen.
