“Surprise! You’re Blooming”

My garden is my happy place. It’s where I go to clear my head when life’s clutter makes me feel like I’m trapped in an overstuffed closet. One morning, as I walked toward my little sanctuary, something white caught my eye. My first thought? Great. Something fell on my plant. Probably a neighbor’s stray plastic bag or some mysterious garden debris.

But as I inched closer, I realized this was no foreign object. My Androlepis skinneri, a plant I never expected to bloom, had the most stunning white flower I’d ever seen. It had broken through its outer layers, revealing a beauty I never saw coming. I stood there, smiling like I had just won the ‘botanical bonanza’. Then it hit me—this must be how Sarah felt when she conceived Isaac.

Sarah, well past her childbearing years, had been labeled barren. The idea of her having a child seemed as absurd as my plant suddenly sprouting a flower. But God had a different plan. Genesis 21:1-2 says, “Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.”

How many of us feel stuck in a season of barrenness? Maybe it’s a dream that feels out of reach, a promotion that seems impossible, or a prayer that’s gone unanswered for too long. But let me remind you—just like my plant, just like Sarah—your blooming season is coming. It’s not too late. Not too late for the perfect partner or the marriage proposal, not too late for the child, not too late for that business to take off, not too late to go back to school, and definitely not too late to step into your God-ordained purpose. God has the final say about every matter in your life. Keep the faith as you wait on him.

Reflection:

What areas of your life feel barren? Where have you stopped expecting to see fruit? Take a moment to surrender those things to God and trust that, in His perfect timing, your bloom is on the way.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for reminding me that barrenness is not the final verdict. Just as You did for Sarah and so many others, I trust that You will bring forth new life and opportunities in my season. Help me to remain faithful, even when I can’t see the bloom yet. I know that in Your perfect timing, I will flourish. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Fun Fact:

The Androlepis skinneri, also known as the “Latigo Bromeliad,” is a rare plant that doesn’t bloom often, but when it does, its flower is a showstopper. Sounds like some of us, doesn’t it? Silent for a while, but when we bloom, we make a statement!
